Backstory on the 'Girlfriends' Soundtrack
I've been trying to get all the information I can about the amazing newly-released Girlfriends The Soundtrack, and I came upon a few interesting tidbits that would make up the backstory.
On the DonnieBö Official Myspace page, I found that he was responsible for the album art for "I Know" by Algebra, the first single released from the soundtrack.
And here is the original 'announcement' (if once could even call it that, cuz Lord knows I searched high and low for any info on this release) from DonnieBö's website:
Also, it is still unknown whether or not the album will get a physical release, but it seems that as of now it is digital all the way and quite possibly iTunes-only.
Please please please support our Girlfriends and the wonderful people behind putting this soundtrack together, Avatar Records and Urbaniti Entertainment!
Thanks for visiting Oh Hell Yes! and keep on coming back for more.

Jennifer Hudson's album to be released in September
>>>
Effie is finally getting her turn in the spotlight.
Jennifer Hudson, onetime American Idol castoff turned bankable (and Oscar-winning) star in her own right, has finally announced a release date for her solo album debut.
The self-titled release from Hudson, who already memorably featured on the Dreamgirls soundtrack, is due out this September on Arista Records. Her first single, "Spotlight," will hit radio on June 9 and be made available for digital download the following day.
"I'm beyond ecstatic about my new album," the star, who continues her industrywide ubiquity by appearing in the upcoming Sex and the City film, said. "I think people will be pleasantly surprised because it shows a side of my work that no one has heard before."
Contributing to that new side is Ne-Yo, Robin Thicke, Timbaland and power ballad songwriter Diane Warren, all of whom worked on the album.
One name that hasn't shown up on any press releases yet: Simon Cowell. Though we're sure he'll find a way to share credit anyhow.

Former 'Dreamgirl' to be the first Black Disney princess!
While this may be old news to some, it was definitely exciting and new to me!
It has been announced that Anika Noni Rose, former 'Dreamgirl', will star as the FIRST African-American Disney princess!!
Titled The Princess and the Frog, Anika is the voice of animated Tiana, a young woman growing up in New Orleans during the Jazz Age of the 1920s. Her mother will be voiced by Angela Bassett, and the staple of a Disney princess film, the fairy godmother-type character, will be voiced by the legendary Jennifer Lewis.
The 2-D animated film is due in theaters Christmas 2009, so we have a ways to go, but I am still very excited to see how this turns out. It's about damn time, that's all I have to say! Haha.
But really, for me being a 20-year-old dude, this is pretty exciting stuff. The first Black Disney princess, former Dreamgirls star, and former Girlfriends guest star all make me a very happy boy :)
Stay tuned to Oh Hell Yes! for more on this as news becomes available...

Persia White marries former 'Girlfriends' guest star!
<<<
Sources confirm to TheYBF.com that our favorite slacker Girlfriend Persia White, 35, married her beau 36 year old Saul Williams on his birthday February 29th. Saul played Persia’s boyfriend Sivad on Girlfriends back in ‘03. He’s a poet, actor, and singer. And Persia, who interestingly still has “single” as her myspace status, is currently working on her first album with her group XE03. But she does have a song featuring her husband as her main page song as well as him listed several times as who she is “listening to” on her blogs.
According to the source, the wedding consisted of just them, a photographer, and the officiant, at a beautiful undisclosed location in California. Congrats to the couple.
>>>[Thanks to the YBF.]
I offer a HUGE congratulations to Persia White of Girlfriends fame and her new husband Saul Williams!!!
I wish them much happiness and a fruitful future!
On Persia's Myspace, she also writes of finding true love and the sad end of Girlfriends:
>>>
WELL.... it's seriously been some time!
I'm so sorry for the silence but I've been in a whirlwind of change!!!!
It seems to be going around as of late and I find many friends in transition.
It all feels good. Change is the turning of time and it must be embraced by us if we are to grow.
I have found heart break and I have found true love!! YES I SAID IT !
True LOVE. I've also found confusion and rejection in Hollywood land.
All a part of the big picture, yet I feel stronger than ever in the wake of everything.
As some of you know, after 8 years Girlfriends has come to an end..... :(
I will miss my Girlfriends family and all the crazy fun that went with being Lynn.
Most of all I will miss YOU, the fans. You have been with me through the years and I am forever thankful, because without you a girl like me would not have a home on prime time TV. thank YOU, thank you , AND THANK YOU !!!!
As with all change, I look for the good and anticipate the beauty of what is to come.
My CD with my band XEO3 will finall surface this year and I will be in some wonderful projects.... I'll keep you posted.
All my love,
Persia

Jill Scott's 'Butterfly' Bra: Hit or Miss?
What is surely a hit for the lovely Jill Scott in terms of business and exposure, it appears that we have a fan-tested review of the new line of bras called Butterfly by Jill Scott that deems them a miss.
Unfortunately for reader (thank God someone's responding to my posts!) Metal Was Never Cuter, the Butterfly did not suit her needs.
To read her response to the bra under my original post about Jill's endeavor into fashion, click here or simply read below:
I am really happy to present to you a review that is honest without being mean; Metal Was Never Cuter provides us with a real insider's perspective on the Butterfly bra, even if it wasn't right for her.
I really appreciate your honesty, Metal Was Never Cuter! Thank you for reading and responding on Oh Hell Yes! And thanks so much for giving everyone a heads-up about how the bra effects people of all sizes.
For more info from Jill herself about the bra line at Ashley Stewart, watch this video:

Again, this was a great hope then a crushing plummet into disappointment.
Apparently, to get a bra that is comfortable or even to fit, I must be passing the morbid obesity mark. I am 5' 4" and 200 pounds; I am a little soft around the middle but there is nothing "fat", "padded", "hefty", or "plus size" about me except my CHEST. When I was 140 pounds I sported a 36 FF chest, 30 inch waist and 42 inch hips.
Unfortunately, Ashley Stewart and Ms Scott feel that I am not entitled to buying their line of clothing. It seems that they feel only plus sized women require bras that are a joy to wear.
Warning large chested women of the world: Don't get your hopes up. No one cares about our comfort yet.

Solange Knowles album news
<<<
Solange Knowles wastes no time setting the record straight about comparisons to older sister Beyonce on her sophomore album, "Sol-Angel and the Hadley Street Dream," due Aug. 26 via Music World/Geffen.
"I'm not her and never will be / two girls gone in different directions, striving towards the same galaxy / let my star light shine on its own / No, I'm no sister, I'm just my God-given name," Knowles sings on the appropriately titled opener "God Given Name."
"Solange wasn't concerned with being perfect on this album," the elder Knowles told Billboard.com. "Beyonce's already got pop and she's perfect at it. Solange just wanted to sing from the heart. She wants her feelings and emotions to touch you. That's why 'God Given Name' was purposely the first song -- so she can share with you how different she is."
Knowles definitely attempts to stray from her sister's staple sound on the upcoming album. With the help of producers the Neptunes, Jack Splash, Q-Tip and Mark Ronson, "Sol-Angel" is less pop, with more of a modern twist on hip-hop and R&B flecked with tinges of blues and jazz.
And, unlike her sister -- who has yet to go public about her relationship and recent marriage to rapper Jay-Z -- Solange has no reservations about sharing personal experiences. Tracks like the break-up song "Valentine's Day," the regretful "T.O.N.Y.," about a one-night stand, and the Pharrell-produced lead single "I Decided," all demonstrate her storytelling abilities.
Other tracks on the set include the Bilal-penned "Cosmic Journey," "Wanna Go Back" featuring Marsha Ambrosius of Floetry, the Estelle-assisted "Same Song, Different Man," "Champagnechronicnightcap," alongside Lil Wayne, and "SandCastle Disco," which is set to be the second single.
As previously reported, the video for "I Decided" is directed by Melina and features Knowles in settings from "American Bandstand," the Civil Rights movement, new wave and a "Cosmic Journey" atmosphere. It will be serviced to music television channels this month. "I Decided Pt. 2" featuring the Freemasons will be released as the first single in Europe in coming weeks.
In addition, Knowles has partnered with Wal Mart and plans on releasing a branded MP3 player soon. She will also embark on "The Art of Love" tour featuring Raheem Devaughn and Chrisette Michele starting next week, and although details were scant, she is currently negotiating another stateside tour and an international endorsement deal.
Knowles' 2003 debut, "Solo Star," via Music World/Columbia, reached No. 23 on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and has sold 112,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen Soundscan.

Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz Get Married!

From People:

Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz Get Married!
By Ulrica Wihlborg
Originally posted Saturday May 17, 2008 10:45 PM EDT
Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz were married Saturday evening in an intimate ceremony, their spokesperson tells PEOPLE exclusively.
"We're delighted to confirm that Pete Wentz and Ashlee Simpson were married this evening in front of family and close friends," said the spokesperson.
Simpson, 23, wore an ivory lace wedding gown by Monique Lhuillier and jewels by William Noble as she and Wentz, 28, exchanged vows in front of 150 guests at her parents' Los Angeles area home.
Dad Joe Simpson performed the non-denominational ceremony, while sister Jessica served as maid of honor. Wentz's English bulldog, Hemingway, was the ring-bearer. Guests included Jessica's boyfriend, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, Nicole Richie and Joel Madden, as well as actor Donald Faison with girlfriend CaCee Cobb.
Simpson told PEOPLE on Friday that she was never the type to dream about her wedding when she was growing up, but changed her tune once she got engaged. "Now that I'm doing it, I definitely have that big dream. It kind of went more fairytale than I thought. I got really into it." Added Wentz, "She has this amazing imagination and to watch it take place is an awesome thing."
With the help of wedding planner Mindy Weiss, Simpson got her dream nuptials: The Alice in Wonderland themed reception featured a wedding cake by Sam Godfrey of Perfect Endings with a top hat, tea pot, stop watch and a pot of flowers on top. The elaborate centerpieces of black beauty roses were by Mark's Garden. Guests were served Rose Veuve Clicquot champagne followed by a sit-down dinner and dancing to a deejay.
Simpson, who sources say is pregnant with the couple's first child, and Wentz, the bassist for Fall Out Boy, have been linked since the fall of 2006, when they were spotted kissing at a New York nightclub. They announced their engagement last month.
"He's a cutie," Simpson told PEOPLE last year. "He has an awesome personality and kind of brings out the best of me and I knew that even before we were dating. There was just like an awesome connection we had."
After they'd been dating almost a year, Wentz told PEOPLE, "We're past the honeymoon period. The truth is, it's crazy to be able to kiss your best friend. It's just a really awesome thing."
This is the first marriage for both.

Funny video from new artist Katy Perry
In the above video from Blender.com, new(er) artist Katy Perry attempts to "return the favor" by signing rockstar men's 'boobs' just like they do to girls. I think she's cute and her little experiment was funny yet pointed because she's trying to show the sexism in the music biz.
Visit Katy's official website to listen to her songs.
Her new single, "I Kissed A Girl" has been playing on New York's Z100 and is available on iTunes (click to buy).
Her album, One of the Boys, is due June 17th.
Golden Brooks ('Girlfriends') in new DVD
<<<
With the cancellation of CW's Girlfriends, it's a pretty good assumption that the girls are in need of some employment and what better way to jumpstart a film career by doing a film based on a hit play. That's what Golden Brooks is doing so far.
Brooks stars in the DVD released film, 'A Good Man Is Hard to Find' , which is the story of three women who each undergo romantic crises that challenge their personal and spiritual relationships. Each must overcome personal demons, resist temptations and withstand bad decisions so they can learn how to find and hold on to... a good man.
The film is based on the stage play of the same name written by Rev. David Payton. Directed by Leslie Small, also featured in the film are Darrin Dewitt Henson, Hill Harper, Darius McCrary, Melissa De Soussa, Mel Jackson, Rachel Nicks, Brandi Coleman, and Deborah Cox.
Produced by Codeblack Entertainment, this is their first project under its deal with 20th Century Fox's faith-based label, FoxFaith.

Celebrity Mother's Day Tribute (Essence mag)
Tracee Ellis Ross and mom Diana Ross
Both women say that no matter how the public may see her, Diana Ross has been a mother first—a single mother for most of the time—kissing her brood of three now-grown daughters (Rhonda, Tracee and Chudney) and two teenage sons (Ross and Evan) goodnight before heading to the studio, making her signature zucchini casserole with Lipton onion soup for them, and calling from the road at bedtime when she was away. If her children knocked on the door seconds before showtime, she always let them in.
"Hers is a deep well of love," Tracee says. "I could be in a swarm of my mom's fans and her eye contact would be enough to make me feel safe and warm."
A woman who has lived her entire adult life—its incredible ups and its very public downs—in the spotlight, Diana says that through it all her children have been her salvation. "My children are my heart and my life," she says. "They mean everything to me. Everything else comes second to my children—my career, everything."
- Isabel Wilkerson
Wow Tracee really looks beautiful... The Ross' are hot stuff!

Ladies First: Mary J. Blige, Alicia Keys and Jill Scott
Hip-hop may be dead, but R&B is alive and kicking with artists Mary J. Blige, Alicia Keys and Jill Scott holding it down
By Regina R. Robertson
Rounding up three multiplatinum, Grammy-winning chart-toppers is no small feat, especially when they’re stationed in different cities and different time zones. Did we mention that one of them was on tour (Mary), one had just come off tour (Jill), and the other was between tours (Alicia)?
For us, Alicia, Mary and Jill are the truth and the light in R&B. During the past year, they, along with other female singers, have bumped the ’hood boys off the top of the charts. No offense, . fellas, but it’s always ladies first here. As the following excerpts from individual chats with each artist reveal, when it comes to penning hits, embracing success, and keeping ahead of the curve, it’s always about the music.
Essence: One thing you all have in common is that you each had a debut album that was a phenomenal success. How do you feel when you hear those songs now?
Mary J. Blige: It’s been about six months since I’ve listened to What’s the 411? I was in Japan working out, and when I heard it, I could definitely feel my youth, but I could also hear that I’ve always had an old soul. When I think back to that time, I remember that I was singing to escape. I understand that some people are stuck in that place, but I firmly believe that if you don’t evolve and grow, you will die.
Essence: From the outside looking in, it seems that success has been yours since day one, but there probably were, and are, disappointments. How do you cope when a project doesn’t pan out?
Jill Scott: This is life, and if something doesn’t work out, then it wasn’t meant to. I feel that there is a divine plan in all things. All I can do is the best I can do, and if it’s well received, then, yeah. If not, I hope life will give me an opportunity to try again. Do I challenge myself? Absolutely. But beat myself up? I just can’t do it.
Essence: Have you ever regretted folding to pressure from record labels?
Alicia Keys: In the beginning, I didn’t understand the concept of boundaries. I wanted to make sure the music was heard, but there’s a price you pay for that. I did everything and anything to promote my first album, like flying from New York to Los Angeles and back on the same day, which was a bit excessive.
Essence: Have you figured out the ingredients for the perfect song?
Mary: Yes, but I won’t tell. [Laughs] For me, it’s about being real and honest. And the lyrics have to be relatable.
Jill: Oh, I wish I knew. I think Ne-Yo knows. I think Carvin Haggins, who does a lot of writing for Musiq Soulchild, has the ingredients, too. My songs are mostly about life experiences, about being human and falling and getting back up. About loving and losing.
Essence: But aren’t those the ingredients right there?
Alicia: It’s always a bit of a mystery. A song should deal with a widely understood emotion, have a really strong, clear explanation of that emotion and a great melody that makes you want to sing it at the top of your lungs. Then the music should evoke the same feeling as the lyrics. Somewhere within all of that lies the perfect song.
For our complete interview with Mary J. Blige, Alicia Keys and Jill Scott pick up ESSENCE's June 2008 issue now on stands.
Sara Bareilles interview w/ Rolling Stone
In this interview with Rolling Stone, Sara Bareilles talks about her album cover:
>>>
I didn't want to be on the album artwork at all. I didn't want it to be about my image as much. I know how important it is, but it can start to be all anybody talks about or cares about. I remember going through a period of time where it had just become a part of the conversation — what I look like, what I'm wearing, what my hair does — and the music took a back seat. You're fooling yourself if you think you got into an industry that doesn't care about image. But if I let myself start to care about it too much it's going to take over, and I really believe that once you lose focus and the music is not the core of why you're making your choices, the shit's going to hit the fan.

Ashlee Simpson performance from Germany
Thanks to my affiliate The Best Damn Blog, here is a performance of "Outta My Head (Ay Ya Ya)" by Ashlee Simpson from Germany.
What a great performance! I liked that it was reminiscent of the music video.
Now if Ashlee had done performances like this in the States, maybe "Outta My Head" wouldn't have been such a flop...
... but luckily she's been promoting "Little Miss Obsessive" on various shows, so hopefully that'll take off.

We considered all of your votes and have moved away from “How It Make You Feel” (162 Votes), “The Real Thing” (277 Votes) and “Wanna Be Loved” (342 Votes)… to “Whenever You’re Around” (527 Votes!!!).
Thanks to all the 1,300 people who voted on the single…. we’re listening and reading your posts….
So that leads us to “Whenever You’re Around” being the 3rd single… already picking up spins at radio stations over the past few weeks.
Here is this week’s radio report:
“Whenever You’re Around” had 102 Mediabase spins and 86 spins at BDS.
“My Love”, the second single is still going on strong maintaining in the Top 10 position.
“My Love” is #10* at Mediabase and BDS. Urban Main/Rhythmic had 76 spins and Music Choice had 31 spins.
Help both singles to the top… Please request your local radio stations.
At this time we don’t know if there will be a music video for WYA… but stay posted you never know…
